Real estate analysts estimate that there are much more than 2,5000 to 2,7000 farmhouses in and around areas close to major metro cities in India. This number will almost double in coming years because of a July 2013 government policy that reduces the minimum area required for a property to qualify for a farmhouse from 2.5 acres to one acre.
The new government policy will also allow foreign investors to carry out construction in 20,000 square meters as minimum requirement down from 50,000 square meters, while reducing minimum investment to 5 million U.S. dollars.
